No Heat Checklist
Before you call, a few quick checks can sometimes get your system running again. If you still do not have heat, contact your local DOC Comfort Center or call 1-800-794-4362.
- Is your emergency switch on?
- Is there enough oil or propane in your tank?
- Is the thermostat set above current room temperature?
- If your thermostat is electronic, are the batteries still good?
- Press the RELAY RESET button on the relay box. PRESS ONLY ONCE.
- Check the fuse boxes for blown fuses or circuit panel for tripped circuits.
- Check burner switches and be sure they are in the on position (there’s a switch near the burner and usually one at the top of the basement stairs with a red plate).
Heating oil safety
Heating oil is safe when your equipment and tank are properly maintained, but the issues that cause the biggest headaches usually start small: a tired burner, a clogged filter, or a tank that looks fine outside but is thinning internally.
Practical safety habits that help prevent problems:
- Schedule routine service to schedule an annual tune-up.
- Keep the area around your boiler/furnace clear (no storage against equipment).
- Pay attention to odors or staining near your tank, lines, or burner—if something seems off, call.
- Protect your tank. DOC’s TankSure® program uses inspection plus an ultrasonic test to check tank thickness and internal corrosion. It’s typically completed during an annual tune-up by DOC technicians.
- Take tank leaks seriously. DOC notes that a leaking tank can create fire/environmental hazards, contaminate groundwater, and impact indoor air quality if oil spills into a basement—cleanup can be expensive and may not be fully covered by insurance.
If you suspect a safety issue (odor, leak, or system behaving abnormally), call 1-800-794-4362 for guidance and next steps. Consider a Service Protection Plan to protect your boiler, furnace or hot water heater.
Heating Oil FAQs
Heating oil is the fuel used in many boilers and furnaces. In most homes, “heating oil” refers to #2 fuel. DOC delivers #2 fuel and kerosene to homes and businesses.
DOC delivers heating oil within its service area. If you’re unsure whether you’re in range or want to confirm delivery days in your neighborhood, contact your local DOC Comfort Center.
You can request a delivery online or call your local DOC Comfort Center. If you need fuel urgently, calling is the fastest way to get clear timing and next steps.
Delivery timing depends on your area’s route schedule and current demand. If you’re worried you’ll run out soon, call as early as possible—especially ahead of storms.
With automatic delivery, DOC plans your deliveries for you (so you don’t have to watch the gauge). With will-call, you monitor your tank and request a delivery when you’re ready.
DOC uses a computer program and weather monitoring to help determine when you’ll need a delivery next.
Customers on automatic delivery have 30 days from the date of delivery to pay their bill.
For will-call and COD delivery types, DOC notes a 100-gallon minimum requirement.
Start with DOC’s no-heat checklist (thermostat, emergency switch, breakers, and the reset button only once). If you still don’t have heat, call 1-800-794-4362 for help.
DOC specifically says to press the relay reset button only once. If the system doesn’t restart, call for assistance.
Cold snaps, thermostat settings, drafts, and equipment efficiency can all increase usage. If your system is running longer than usual or struggling to keep temperature, a maintenance check can help identify issues before they become a breakdown.
Some systems require kerosene or use it in certain setups. If you’re not sure what your equipment needs, DOC can help you confirm the right fuel type.
DOC states it provides 24/7 emergency oil deliveries and offers 24/7 service support. If you have a no-heat situation or urgent fuel concern, call 1-800-794-4362.
Tanks can look fine outside while corroding internally. Odors, staining, wet spots near the tank/lines, or unexplained issues are reasons to call. DOC also offers TankSure® inspections that use ultrasonic testing to check tank thickness and internal corrosion.
TankSure® includes an inspection and ultrasonic test of above-ground fuel oil tanks using EPA-approved technology to help measure tank thickness and detect internal corrosion. It’s typically conducted during an annual tune-up by DOC technicians.
